Using David Hodge's lesson (including the alternative voicings and a couple of fills), I incorporated a fingerpicking pattern to be played with the verses. I pick the verses slowly, giving a little more "bluesy/edgy" feel more like Traffic's (Dave Mason) original version, and strum the chorus, more like Joe Cocker's version.

The key to the picking pattern is to hold the first note of each bar for a full beat, and also the 1st note on the e-string of both A7 chords for a full beat (ie. from beat 1.5 to 2.5)

Be sure to hold the last chord of the Chorus before resuming fingerpicking in the verses.

I don't use a capo on this one, but place it on the 4th fret to play with the recording. (The strumming and fill section in the middle won't match the recording.)

The notations (pima) above and below the bars are what I use for the picking hand.

Chords:

E7 (standard): 020100
A7 (standard): x02020

A7 (mini-bar): x02223

E7 (alt. voicing): 076700
A7 (alt. voicing): 007680

Thanks for the lesson David!

Verse 1:

E7 A7
Well I think I've got to have a change of scene
E7 A7
Cause every night I have the strangest dream
E7 A7
Imprisoned by the way things used to be
E7 A7
Left alone here on my own or so it seems
E7 A7
I've got to get on out of here before I start to scream
E7 A7
Cause somebody locked the door and threw away the key

Chorus:

E7 A7
(Are you) Feelin' alright
E7 A7
I'm not feelin' too good myself
E7 A7
(Well you) Feelin' alright
E7 A7 (let ring)
I'm not feelin' too good myself

Verse 2:

Well baby you sure took me on one big ride
And even now I stop and wonder why
Cause when I stop to think of you I start to cry
But I mustn't get upset, oh no, I must keep dry
I've got to stop believin' in all your lies
Cause I've got just too much to do before I die

Repeat Chorus

E7/A7 - Alternate Voicing (Chorus w/o words)

Verse 3:

Don't you get too lost on all I say
Cause at the time I really felt that way
But that was then and now it's today
I can't get off yet and so I'm here to stay
'Til someone comes along and takes my place
With a different name and yes a different face

Repeat Chorus

End on E7 chord (022130)

"Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."
