Hello

I hope there are a few Maiden fans around

I would like to ask you if you could help me with "Strange world" from the first Iron Maiden album

I know that chords change every measure (Em, G, D, C) but what's the best strummin pattern? I tried a few but I'm not utterly satisfied with any of them

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Matteo

Hi matteo, I've been trying to figure out Strange World too. It's a great song!

I dont know if the chord sequence you're playing is quite right. It's hard to tell with Maiden tunes because they use two guitars, one playing an octave higher or something. And it's got that flanger going through most of the song.

Drop the G chord, I tried it and it seems wrong. Try Em, C, D, C instead. Kinda play them in an appegrio sort of way. Down first and then up and down on the bottom 2 or 3 strings.

So the verses are :

Em C
The only place where you can dream,

D C
Living here is not what it seems.

Em C
Ship of white, light in the sky,

D C
Nobody there to reason why.

Em C
Here I am, I'm not really there,

D C
Smiling faces ever so rare.

Em C
Let's walk in deepest space,

D C
Living here, just isn't the place.

*Note below*

Em C
Stalk of light come from the ground,

D C
When I cry there isn't a sound.

Em C
All my feelings cannot be held,

D C
I'm happy in my new strange world.

Em C
Shades of green, grasses entwine,

D C
Girls drinking plasma wine.

Em C
Look at love, a dream enfolds,

D C
Living here you'll never grow old.

*Note* there's an Em Barre chord after the last measure in each verse.

-7----7---7-----7--
-8--8---8---8---8--
-9------------9-9--
-9-----------------
-7-----------------
-0-----------------

For the notes after the first strum I lift the Barre and then put my fingers at the 9, 8, and 7 frets for the last bit.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it sounds better than the Em, G, D, C sequence you've been trying.

Martin B.

What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It’s got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

thanks a lot, i'll try it. But if I don't play arpeggios how could I strum it?

what about

D udud du for each chord?

Thanks again

Hi Matteo,

I have to correct what I suggested to you yesterday about your chord sequence, it's closer than what I was playing before. It's got to be a G after the Em, not the C like I thought. Man it's hard to get this song.

So I played around a little with it today and it seems better if the cords get shifted up the neck a little. I was playing it with the Em in the barre position like I showed yesterday and then tried the other chords further up the neck too. I 'm starting to think it's a little closer. But the songs got some weird timing to it! I'm going to work at this for a while for the pattern, it seems to change throughout the verse. I'll post what I figure out.

Here's the chords I've been trying it with:

Em G? D C
-7----7----2----3-
-8----8----3----5-
-9----7----2----5-
-9---------0----5-
-7--------------3-
-0----------------

Try these and let me know what you think. Somehow I think we can figure out this tune.

hi mate

I remember that a few months ago a friend of mine showed me it and he played Em, G, D, C and it did sounded right to my ears. Regarding the strummin it was quite strange and at the time I was not able to replicate it.

If remember correctly it was a bit like

D uud DU for each chord

or maybe

it can be played something like

D udu D du for each chord

But as you said it is quite hard because there are several guitars, one playing arpeggios...

In any case a big, big thank you for the effort you're doing in order to help me

Matteo

Ok yesterday a friend of mine showed me the simplified strummin version of "Strange world". Of course Maiden play it with lots of arpeggios, harmonics and whatever but the feel of the song could be kept if played with the following strummin pattern:

D udu D du for each chord

The chords are Em, G, D, C and goes on for all the verses and the chorus

Let me know

I solved the arcane

the song is in six/eights that's why the pattern is so tricky! So it should be played in a simple version with just six downstrums for each chord, accenting the first and fourth of them, or better with the folloing pattern

D dudu D dudu for each chord

yesterday I tried it again playing along the cd. Of course Maiden play it down on th eneck (I've seen from some tabs around 7th to 9th fret), to play it with open chords it works well playing a picking patten like this

Em
6th string
5th string
4th string
1st
2nd
3rd

play it twice in a 6/8 fashion (so it's one, two, three, one , two three)

for the other chords use a similar pattern, startiong each time from the bass string. If you want to strum play

D udu D udu for each chord

Let me know

Matteo

p.s. of course this is only the verses chords, not the intro or the solos
