NO SURPRISES - Radiohead
Put a capo on the 3rd fret.
I've written a simplified version, for starters. This is the intro riff, which is repeated four times. The first of them only on electric guitar and glockenspiel, and the other two are followed by the drums, the bass, and strums on the pointed chords:
D D D G
e|---2-------2-------2--------------0---|
B|-------3-------3-------3--------3-----|
G|-----2---2---2---2---2---2--0-3-------|
On the spaces noted D-G, play the strumming sequence as in the intro.
D Bm
A heart that's full up like a landfill
G
A job that slowly kills you
A D-G
Bruises that won't heal
D
You look so tired-unhappy
Bm
Bring down the government
G A D-G
They don't, they don't speak for us
D
I'll take a quiet life
Bm
A handshake of carbon monoxide
CHORUS
Em A Asus4 A
With no alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
D-G
Silence
D-G
Silence
D
This is my final fit
Bm
My final bellyache
CHORUS
Em A Asus4 A
With no alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
D-G A G A G Em Em A A
Please
D
Such a pretty house
Bm
Such a pretty garden
CHORUS
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
Em A Asus4 A
No alarms and no surprises
D-G D-G (end on D)
Please
ALTERNATE VERSION FOR SOLO PLAYING
If you're playing solo with an acoustic, you can use these riffs all along the song instead of strumming the chords to simulate the wandering glockenspiel:
D
e|---2-------2-------2-------2---------|
B|-------3-------3-------3-------3-----|
G|-----2---2---2---2---2---2---2---2---|
Bm
e|---2-------2-------2-------2---------|
B|-------3-------3-------3-------3-----|
G|-----4---4---4---4---4---4---4---4---|
G A
e|---3-------3-------0-------0---------|
B|-------0-------0-------2-------2-----|
G|-----0---0---0---0---2---2---2---2---|
For a cool effect, play the riffs during the first and second verse, then strum all the chorus, the solo part and the 'such a pretty house' bit. To finish off, end with the intro riff again.
Enjoy this sad but beautiful song!
