This is a great song from Crosby Stills & Nash that I learnt about a year ago so its not that hard

Dead easy chords D, G, and A with a little pesky Bm on the last line
of each chorus.

In several places, you can trying playing around with the A chord on the
B string. The pattern is A Asus4 A Asus2 A. It brings more life to it.

The chord structures are:

--------E A D G B e
D----- 0 0 0 2 3 2
G------3 2 0 0 0 3
A------0 0 2 2 2 0
Asus4-0 0 2 2 3 0
Asus2-0 0 2 2 0 0
Bm----2 2 4 4 3 2

or if the Bm barre is hard just form e2 B3 G4 D4 and hit those strings only.

INTRO: (D)/////// (G)/////// (D)/////// (A)///////

Strum Pattern as near as I can judge is:

(D)d uu dd uu (G)d uu dd uu (D)d uu dd uu (A)d uu dd uu

and then (D) again into the verse.

Anyway have a go!

Verse 1:

(D)You who are on the (G)road

Must have a (D)code that you can live (A)by

And (D)so become your(G)self

Because the (D)past is just a (A)good-bye.

Chorus:

(D)Don't you ever ask them (G)why, if they told you, you will (D)cry,

So just look at them and (Bm)sigh (G) (A)

and know they love (D)you. (G) (A) (D)

Verse 2:

(D)Teach your children (G)well,

Their father's (D)hell did slowly go (A)by,

And (D)feed them on your (G)dreams

The one they (D)picks, the one you'll know (A)by.

Chorus:

(D)Don't you ever ask them (G)why, if they told you, you will (D)cry,

So just look at them and (Bm)sigh (G) (A)

and know they love (D)you. (G) (A) (D)

Verse 3:

(D)And you, of tender (G)years,

Can't know the (D)fears that your elders grew (A)by,

And (D)so please help them with your (G)youth,

They seek the truth before they can (A)die.

Chorus:

(D)Don't you ever ask them (G)why, if they told you, you will (D)cry,

So just look at them and (Bm)sigh (G) (A)

and know they love (D)you. (G) (A) (D)

Verse 4:

(D)Teach your parents (G)well,

Their children's (D)hell will slowly go (A)by,

And (D)feed them on your (G)dreams

The one they (D)picks, the one you'll know (A)by.

Chorus:

(D)Don't you ever ask them (G)why, if they told you, you will (D)cry,

So just look at them and (Bm)sigh (G) (A)

and know they love (D)you. (G) (A) (D)

Hope you liked it

Chris

ps
There's some nice lead steel string picking on the original song, maybe some of you out there could add this for the more advanced among us.

Nice job, Chris....just one little thing, the Asus as you've tabbed it is actually an A sus4, and the A6 as you've tabbed it is an Asus2....

A6 would be either

E A D G B E
0 0 2 2 2 2

or
E A D G B E
0 0 4 2 2 0

There are a lot of songs which use maj/sus4/maj/sus2 runs..."Free Falling" which is pretty near the top is one, Lynrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" uses it as well, but in that song it's Dsus4/D/Dsus2/D

I'd advise anyone to play about with majors, sus4ths, sus2nds, and maj 7ths...you can get some really nice progressions out of them!

I've been a bit unwell for the last few weeks....I'll try and get round to "Get it On" etc soon....

:D :D :D

Well - I'll get there, may be a couple of months or more, but in the immortal words of Arnie, "I'll be back!!!"

Hey Dogsbody,

Fantastic tab, great song as well.

Just tried it out, but I used a simpler strumming and fingerpicked as well. I will have to listen to the song to understand the strumming pattern.

Cheers

Good Song.

But I think your strumming has a 1/2 beat too many in it. I was fiddling around and came up with this pattern as one that works pretty nicely for the verses.

Du..u..uDu
1+2+3+4+

This also sounds cool...
Play the upstokes, the "and" beats, on beats 1 2 & 4 with a stacatto feel. Muting with the heal or edge of your pick hand. (some call this a heal stroke) Almost like a Reggae groove.

For the chorus I use a more of a straight Du strum with slow single strums at the Bm G A for expression.

Great song for playing around with all types of strumming patterns.

Rock on...
