Another great Tom Waits tune, from one of my definite all time favourite albums. I you don't have "Nighthawks at the diner" in your collection: run away and buy it - now!

OK, this is maybe not an *easy* song, but it's not terribly complicated either. Takes some time to get a feel for the 3/4 strumming. The Emaj7 chord takes some stretching, but it really sounds good to empasises the G# on the top - IMO.

Intro: Emaj7 | C#m7 | F#9 | B7 C#* B*

Emaj7 C#m F#9
Warm beer and cold women, I just don't fit in
B7
Every Joint I stumbled into tonight
Emaj7 B7 C#* B*
That's just how it's been.
Emaj7 C#
All these double knit strangers with
F#9 B7
Gin and vermouth, and recycled stories
Emaj7 E F#* E*
In their naugahyde booths.
A B7 Emaj7 C#m7
all these platinum blondes, and tobacco brunettes,
F#9
I'll be drinkin to forget you,
B7 E F#* E*
I'll lite another cigarette.
A B7 Emaj7 C#m7
And the band's playin' something by Tammy Wynette,
F#9 B7 E B7 C#* B*
And the drinks are on me tonight.

All my conversations I'll just be talkin' about you baby
Borin' some sailor as I try to get through.
I just want him to listen, that's all you have to do,
He said I'm better off without you,
Till I showed him my tattoo
Now the moon's rising, ain't no time to lose,
Time to get down to drinking,
Tell the band to play the blues.
And the drinks are on me, I'll buy another round,
At the last ditch attempt saloon.

(Note: slightly different lyrics in third verse)

Warm beer and cold women, I just don't fit in
Every Joint I stumbled into tonight
That's just how it's been
All these double knit strangers with
Gin and vermouth,and receding hairlines
In their naugahyde booths.
all these platinum blondes, and tobacco brunettes,
I'll just be drinkin to forget you,
I lite a mentol cigarette.
And the band's playin' something by Johnny Barnett
At the last ditch attempt saloon

...only thing I know how to do is to keep on keepin' on...
