You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - The Beatles

Yet another pub classic....just four chords and a few simple variations on one of them....I don't actually have a copy of this handy, so I'm doing this off the top of my head...
I'll even throw in a nice little intro for free....

Chords used...

G D F C D/C D/B D/A Dsus4 Dsus2
E 3 2 1 0 2 2 2 3 0
B 0 3 1 1 3 3 3 3 3
G 0 2 2 0 2 2 2 2 2
D 0 0 3 2 0 0 0 0 0
A 2 x 3 3 3 2 0 x x
E 3 x 1 x x x x x x

INTRO.....

D...D/C...D/B...D/A....G...G...G...G

Play the bass note then DUD....this pattern's used all the way through the verse....

(G)Here I (D)stand, (F)head in (G)hand,
(C)Turn my (C)face to the (F)wall,(C)
(G)If she's (D)gone I (F)can't go (G)on,
(C)Feeling (C)two feet (F)sma-(C)-aa(D)-all,(Dsus4)(D)
(G)Every(D)where, (F)people (G)stare,
(C)Each and (C)every (F)da--(C)ay,
(G)I can (D)see them (F)laugh at (G)me,
(C)And I (C)hear them (F)say, (C)hey, (D)hey,...

Repeat intro riff (beginning with the last D chord, but only two measures of the G chord, the first of which begins the chorus...)

CHORUS....

(G)Hey, (G)you've got to (C)hide your (C)love a(D)way (Dsus4) (D) (Dsus2) (D)
(G)Hey, (G)you've got to (C)hide your (C)love a(D)way (Dsus4) (D) (Dsus2) (D)

(Then repeat four measures of the G chord.....)

Second verse....

(G)How can (D)I, (F)even (G)try,
(C)I can (C)never (F)win,(C)
(G)Hearing (D)them, (F)seeing (G)them,
(C)In the (C)state I'm (F)i-(C)i-(D)in,(Dsus4)(D)
(G)How could (D)she, (F)say to (G)me,
(C)Love will (C)find a (F)way,(C)
(G)Gather (D)round, (F)all you (G)clowns,
(C)Let me (C)hear you (F)sa-(C)a-(D)ay,

Repeat intro riff (beginning with the last D chord, but only two measures of the G chord, the first of which begins the chorus...)

Then repeat the chorus.....

Then for the outro....STILL!!! the same strumming pattern....

G...D...F...G...C...C...F/F (the last two are two quick downstrokes)
G...D...F...G...C...C...F/F...F/F/G (two quick F downstrokes after the C, the second of which you follow with the DUD pattern, followed with two more quick F's followed
immediately with a G.....downstroke....and let it ring....!!!!!

NOTE....on the 2nd 4th 6th and 8th lines of the verses, where you see the second C is where you play the bass-note....
same applies to the two consecutive G chords and the two consecutive C chords in the chorus....

Well...that's the way we did it in the pub last wednesday, except that one guy knocked out a lovely
lead line for the outro....

Hope this comes out OK.....

Vic.

Very nice arrangement. Are you using your thumb on the A string for the D/C and D/B chords?

Yes, I do use my thumb on those D/C and D/B chords....it works for me because I normally use my thumb on, for example, the following chords..

D....I play the 2nd fret of the 6th string with my thumb so I can use all 6 strings for a D chord (1st fret for Dm)

F...1st fret, 6th string and Bm...2nd fret, 5th and 6th strings...I find it easier to change to these than put a full barre on so lowon the neck....
ditto F#m, especially when changing from an A chord....

Thanks for responding, Vic.

Using the thumb for F# on the low E string for the D chord sounds interesting - I'm going to try that.

Hi Vic,

Brilliant job mate, good to see an easy version of this song.

Well I say easy because I'm sat here at 10:10pm playing it in my head. Don't think the family would appreciate me getting the guitar out at this time of night.

Must have a go at it tomorrow. THUMBS up from me.

Cheers

Chris

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)
