Hi y'all,

I just posted a free, full length, mp3 backing track for you to download.

It's a slightly lower bit rate and mono version of a sequence I use in The Sophisticats (lower bit rate and mono to keep the file size smaller for downloading on slow connections). We use a 192k stereo version to play Sweet Home Chicago

You can use the mp3 for practice, jamming, or whatever. Although the copyright on this arrangement is automatically granted to me, I am hereby granting you permission to use it any way you like.

To download the mp3 file go to: http://www.nortonmusic.com/freemp3.html Note: I don't know how much traffic my Web Host's server can handle, so if you are having trouble downloading it, try again at a later time.

Comments on the mp3 are appreciated.

Happy holidays.

Thanks, it sounds good. Much easier for me to use mp3 than midi- it's a little crowded by the pc, makes it hard to use midi files.

You're welcome.

I used to use MIDI files on the gig, they are small, and very portable, but I grew to a half-dozen MIDI sound modules/samplers. Schlepping the sound modules, samplers, a sub-mixer in a 12 space rack became a pain. Especially since I do one-nighters. Not only is the rack cumbersome and heavy, but there were many MIDI and audio connections to either fall out of their jacks or need constant cleaning to keep the corrosion away. This increased set-up time.

I started making mp3 files for my backing tracks. At 192kbps they sound almost as good as the original, and with the ambient room noise in the places I play that slight difference is not noticeable at all.

While I still make my mp3 files with MIDI, I'll probably never go back to using MIDI on stage for the backing tracks. Here is how I currently make and use my Backing Tracks: http://www.nortonmusic.com/backing_tracks.html -- feel free to link to this page if you feel it's worthy.
