Compression Pedals: Do they always provide sustain?

Many compression pedals are labeled as compression/sustain. Some have sustain knobs and some don't. Some compression pedals that don't have sustain knobs still have the ability to create sustain.

Question is:

Regardless of how the pedal is labeled/what knobs it has, can all compression pedals create sustain/have the ability to sustain?

Thanks.

Yes, in practical terms.

Compression flattens the range of volume - loud sounds get softer, and soft sounds get louder. As a sound "dies away" the vibration is still there, but it's now below the sensitivity of your ears. But if you're manipulating the wave to increase the intensity of the softer sounds, those vibrations end up above the hearing threshold.
