Last week we started to speak about Tubescreamers in this thread. In order to do not hijack the thread definitely I start this new one.

I was in my usual store this morning and they also recommended to me the Fulltone OCD. These pedals are more or less in the same price range.

I have to read some reviews and also look for some info and demos but I'd like very much to hear some of your opinions on this pedal. I made a quick search on these forums and just there were a couple of recommendations.

Thanks in forward,
Nuno

PS. Dogbite, thanks for the link to Sweetwater! They don't sell overseas.

In the store, it seemed to me it had "too many" overdrive. He was playing a guitar with humbuckers, an Ibanez I think, he also selected the mode single coil but the sound didn't change considerably. I was reading some reviews and forums and everybody agrees it is in the "overdrive->distortion" pedal package and its output is greater than the Tubescreamers.

Really I like the sound when the amp overdrives naturally in the clean channel and I can achieve it when I put the volume to 12 (max) or a very little of overdrive. This pedal sounds very nice and you can use the guitar volume to reduce the overdrive but I don't know if it is good to me.

Just a comment. Everybody remarks the great dynamic behavior.

If you want a good classic "tubescreamer" tone, try the Behringer TO800 Vintage Overdrive. I have recommended this pedal many times, still do. You would be surprised how great this pedal sounds. I have quite a few good overdrive pedals like a 80's ProCo Rat, Marshall Guvnor Plus II, and others, but this is the pedal I go to 90% of the time. It always sounds great. Plus, it will save you a bundle of money and is easy to get in Europe.

Here it is with a Strat

With a Les Paul copy

This guy says he prefers it over his modded Ibanez Tubescreamer.

Once you play this pedal, you will become a believer too. If you want to spend tons of money you can, but you can get this great overdrive for much, much less.

Thanks Wes! :D

I know you love this pedal. I asked for it, too, but they didn't have any Behringer at this moment. I'll check it out in another store.

Part of the tone is in the fingers of the first guy! I remember I saw that video when I was looking for semi-hollows.

I've mentioned the Rocktron Austin Gold in other threads, and I still think it's a real "sleeper" pedal. The thing just sounds great! If you can find a store that has one, it's definitely worth checking out. Plus, the price is in the bottom range of OD pedals, but still has a heavy extruded-aluminum chassis and big heavy-duty Carling foot-switch.

It's also very flexible. It will go from a clean boost to a fairly-dirty classic rock sound. If you hit it with a boosted signal from a compressor or other effect that provides some clean boost, it acts very much like a tube amp, as it will increasingly distort and compress very smoothly with the amount of signal you feed it. The "Pre-Bass" control I really like, as most rigs under overdrive or distortion will either have too much bass and lose definition and get muddy, or will get too "shrill" with no punch to the bottom end.

Cheers!

stratman. that sounds like a good pedal. so true about the bass. that is why I went for the turbo tubescreamer.
with the extra three setting you have bass boosts and clarity. my bottom end fattened up. it was loose, gravelly and clear. not muddy like cheap sounding asian humbuckers.
with the analogman mod I have it just where I want it.

Thanks Stratman! I've seen my usual store also sells this brand. I'll ask for it next week.

Dogbite, then... how does the Analogman mod change the original sound? Do they add something similar to the "Pre-Bass" control?

For those that don't have a local shop that has one of the Austin Golds about to test-drive, here's a Musicians Friend link with reviews and sound clips. The reviews make some interesting reading, and I can attest to their praises. Not one review that didn't rave on this OD, and I've found the reviews there pretty accurate. This pedal really is one of those 'sleepers' that players just haven't 'discovered' yet. At $69, hard to go wrong here. I know this is one pedal that I won't be getting rid of ever. If anything, I may buy another to have as a backup seeing as it's so cheap.

nuno. analogman does a couple of mods on tubrescreamers. one mod gets you the brown sound that EVH made popular.
personally, I did not like it. I had him remodify mine. he made the dirt more looser or flabby as he called it. he almost creates a true bypass and changes a chip inside to improve the overall performance.
I was pleased before the mod. the turbo tubrescreamer with the four controls gave me more bottom end than the original TS9.
then ewith the mod everything is a tad more enhanced.

I'm not very active lately. Just a quick update.

Finally I bought a BBE Green Screamer this morning, it overdrives naturally the tube amps. I checked with a Strat and with a LP-like guitar and with Mesa and Fender tube amps. I was playing with my Strat this night. Great range of sounds. Some people says that it is similar to the old TS808, I don't know, I never used them. To me, it is very clear and its best feature is its dynamics: you can achieve an almost clean sound or a 'severe' overdrive tone just with the pick attack.

I also checked the Ibanez TS9 (BTW very expensive in Spain, around 180€). I liked very much its sound, I can identify some classical bluesmen tones. Even I can do a good blues tone with that pedal. It doesn't have the same dynamics than the BBE. The dynamics and the price made I went on the BBE.

However... I guess I will buy the TS9, normal or turbo, one of these months, perhaps, if I reach my goal in my next marathon!

Thanks Dogbite! :D

I know... I knew the tone is in the Ibanez, I'm not sure if it is in the BBE, I think so, but meanwhile I enjoy playing. The BBE has a very light overdrive, it is very sensitive. Today I was playing and I wrote some nice configs.

Yesterday I said in the store: Don't sell the Ibanez, I'll be back!

Hi again,

I was in a guitar store for buying cables last week and (un)fortunately they received some pedals: a couple of Love Pedals, the COT and the Eternity, and a MI Audio, the Blues Pro. They are friends so we were trying and comparing them. Nice pedals.

I liked very much the COT. It is absolutely simple, just a pot, and you can get great tones. It is very easy to get a Billy Gibbons' tone. Great dynamics. We were comparing to the OCD as well. (Practically every time I go to the store we speak or try an OCD. Always there is somebody that is asking for it.)

You know, I'm very happy with my Green Screamer but sometimes, something wakes up some old memory...

Summarizing: I bought an OCD this morning!

I have a version 3 OCD and from what I understand it is the darker sounding one. It is thick sounding with just the right amount of crisp brightness. When I set the distortion amount anywhere from 9:00 or lower I am able to turn my guitar volume knob to very the amount of dirt all the way down to a glassy clean sound with only a slight variation in volume. i take it with me everywhere as it will do this with any amp, tube or solid state, and be at unity gain... so you don't haave to drive the amp like with an old fuzz. When jamming, I set the gain at under unity so that if I turn of the OCD, my straight through sound is louder and I can play with pick dynamics. I want to try one of the other versions to see how less lows would open up the sound. I set the distortion on the high end so I can access all the lighter stuff with my volume knob.
Nice pedal.
