I was at the Kerrville Folk Festival this last weekend, working on the stage crew.

I was told that the guy running the sound board used some kind of effect on the acoustic guitars which would duplicate just the low frequencies and drop them down an octave, giving the acoustic guitars a fatter and beefier sound.

It worked great, they sounded terrific. But I didn't get a chance to find out exactly what the effect was or what it was called. Does anyone have any idea?

Probably something like a Peavey Kosmos, or an Aphex 204 Aural Exciter, or maybe a BBE Sonic Maximizer.

Aphex and BBE both make pedal versions of their products, and Aphex has one specifically for acoustic guitar with a built-in DI output. I have the bass version, and it definitely makes a small rig sound much bigger.

Behringer recently announced lower-priced knockoffs of the Aphex and BBE rackmount units.
