Whapped off a quick one, so it's pretty fumbley but hopefully guessable:
Sitar Zan
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=640626
I think it was played on a sitar in the original, so that should help narrow down the time frame!
:)

Your teacher has you learning those trumpet lines? That's some pretty heady stuff.
Short story: My instructor and I recently discussed our plans for the year and one of the things he said: 'you've got some good theory, skills and technique under your belt. I want you to start using that to develop your ear. Work on learning some solos (guitar, trumpet or sax). You probably won't get it all, but start finding the melody, notes and phrasing, see if you determine the scale, etc...'.
He's sort of 'pushed me out of the nest and making me fly'
Well... it certainly sounds familiar, but I can't yet place it.
Sounds like the theme song to Kids in the Hall.
Ya got me..........
Hue, I think maybe you listened to the wrong file.
It's the one at the top 'Sitar Zan'.
Pretty obscure one from the 'Flower Power' era, I think.
Artist clue: He goes by his first name.
Song Clue: 2 words. For the second word, think comic book superhero.
:)
Don
boxboy, thanks for the info on the song. I'll have learn the fancier version and impressed my grandfather. :D
I'm guessing "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan?
Bingo!
Nice going, jw...take it away... :)

Alright, I decided to follow Boogie's lead and record w/out effects to make it a little more difficult. I rushed to get it posted, so it's not perfect.
I didn't sound that far away from the original did I?
That's a hint and there was a hint to the artist in my original post.
I've been ill for a few days. I just listened. Sounds really familiar. Let me consider the clues and the riff...
I've got an idea of the band from the hints, but I don't any of their albums. It's taking me a while to listen to samples. Of course, I could be on a wild goose chase if I have the wrong band :(
OK, here's a hint which might confirm your artist and narrow their library down...
The band has already made an appearance in this thread and the riff guessed before and the riff I played make perfect bookends of their career so far.
(I actually didn't plan that but noticed it after I posted)
Boogie, I just listened to the sample on iTunes and it doesn't include the riff. But I have given clues to the title that you should be able to get it anyway.
This is a wild guess, but is it:
Rush - Distant Early Warning
Yes to Rush, no to Distant Early Warning. But, the correct title does involve distance and a possible synonym for warning. Think of my career bookend hint: the other riff was Working Man, which was on their first album, so this one is on...
