Hi all, I know you can have double sharps and flats but is their such a thing as a double dotted note?  if so how would you figure it out?  would the second dot's value be derived from the original note, the original note plus the first dot, or the first dot?

Yes, there is a double dotted note and it works just like the first dot. The first dot adds half the value of the note, the second adds half the value of the first dot

Quarter note double dot = quarter note + eighth note + 16th note.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

wait..

crotchet                         = 1
dotted crotchet             = 1.5
double dotted crotchet  = 1.25
triple dotted crotchet     = 1.125

?

nah... a double dotted would be 1.75 crotchets, and a triple dotted 1.875 (each one's half of the previous dot)

Double dots are rare, but they do occur.  I've never seen a triple dot -- easier to count if you use ties, once you get beyond doubles.

you could have two dots following and one above.   ;D

then you'd have a staccato quarter note + eighth note + 16th note.

Ah, yes.  Except those dots we call stacatto marks. :)
