ALSO important: Dynamics. Play soft at times and slow, and then speed up and get louder. Or don't speed up, and just get louder. It'll make your improv a lot more interesting.
VERY important!

That also means you can't just crank your amp wide open and blast all the time. Don't use compressor pedals or attenuators. Set your amp for the loudest volume and brightest tone you'd ever want to use, then turn down your guitar volume and tone controls for what you want. Those knobs are there to be used, not just cranked wide open and left there. (Same with the knobs on the amp.)
