I'm just trying to figure out some guitar theory here.
It seems that all the strings are perfect fourths of each other except the "G" "B" string jump.
I'm of course talking about the basic E A D G B E tuning.
I'm sure this has to do with making the guitar more playable or I've just drank too much diet Coke.
Can anyone help?

My understanding is that it allows you to play chords eeasily across all six strings.
But then my head is made up of cheese, so I can't be held to that.
But it does make a great dip for crackers.
check out my website for good recording/playing info
I sure don't know what originally spurred the creators to do this, but it does make bar chords much easier. If you were to play a C bar chord in the third position, and all the way across the fret board were perfect 4ths you would be fingering...
E A D G B E
3 3 5 5 6 6(or 3)
Not a good time at all...

Thanks for the insight.
I see how that works.
Now if I could just get my fingers to work.

Somebody forgot to tell that to Keith Richards, Albert Collins, George Thoroughgood and Godsmack. Would someone please tell those guys they are doing it all wrong. It's supposed to be E A D G B E.
Yeah, open tunings are great!
