I am transcribing some solos for guitar and I am playing them with the bass. Some of them are already in standard notation (in G clef) but I am also getting some solos by ear.

I was using the F clef for all and I was assuming I must play one octave above (8va) since generally I play them above the 12th fret although the G clef covers exactly the notes I am using.

On the other hand, I am studying the instruction book Blues Bass by Jon Liebman. The book has several solos for practicing and they are written in the F clef and usually many extension lines (it does very hard to read).

Which clef is used in these cases, the F or the G?

Thanks!

F clef is generally used for bass. I've seen some pieces with mixed clefs for high notes, but very few - you can't count on all bass players reading in G clef.

The typical solution to avoid excess ledger lines is to use an ottava.
