Technique in Night on Bare mountain

you know, well, if you have an mp3 of it, its at the beginning, rapid string movement, i think its like a glissando but then again im not sure.. the way it rapidly shoots up and down and it sounds so sharp.

and also the beginning of Ride of the Valkyries, whats that string technique?
