Actually yes it was.

We have readers from around the world whose first language, or even second language may not be English.

We encourage people to spell it out so it's easier to understand.

and anyway, I'm sure "We're not so deaf we can't read." is humor.

It was a polite request. I could have waded in with the kind of flames that get spewed all over most other web-sites, but I tried to put over the fact that it is not the way that things are done on GN. When in Rome, etc.............

I'm sure that you appreciate that writing in capitals (under normal rules of netiquette) is regarded as shouting. The post was not only in capitals but was in extra large script - shouting very, very loudly. Was that necessary??

Because posts are made off line (in your browser) and there is no limit on the number of characters used in a post, there is absolutely no need to resort to the shorthand used by texters - as Nick pointed out, we have many members, whose first language is not English (include me, if you want, I'm a Tyke - a Loiner, first, but a Tyke second) and they have difficulty with SMS shorthand.
