Never mind. I can't get the chord letters to line up correctly over the lyrics. Too bad; it's a pretty good tune. Anyone have an idea, short of completely re-writing it in the text box?

If you have it in notepad (or word with a monospace font), you can preserve the spacing by using the code tags, like this:

- tab goes here -

When you're typing the reply it'll look like it's all over the place, but it straightens itself out when you post it.

I tried that, and previewed it, and it was all screwy. Will the actual post be correct? I mean, it's not TAB, just the verse lines with the chords on the line above, but the chords get moved.

I'm gonna try it again:

"Green Street"
words and music by Peter Adrian

verse 1
Am
Rain drips down the gutters
Em
the traffic rolls away from home
Am
A stray cat's cry, so lonely
C
as I lie in bed alone
verse 2
Am
Stranger on a city street
Em
a travel-worn guitar
Am
I'm in love with you, girl
C
but I don't know who you are
verse 3
Am
A knock on the door unanswered
Em
single footsteps fade away
Am C
"When will I see you?" "I don't know"
Em G
As I wait through one more day
chorus
G Em
There are no flowers down on Green Street
C Em
and I wonder why the street was named that way
G Em
There is no soft sweet grass underneath my feet
C Em G
just the same thing on a slightly different day
verse 4
Am
Late at night and my mind stops turning
Em
all I can hear is my cigarette burning
C D
then it's out and there's no one here but me
Am
There's nothing on the radio
Em
and nowhere that I need to go
C Em D
The lights are off, there's nothing there to see
verse 5
G
Sometimes I feel like I'm in a movie
Em
that I've seen somewhere before
C
I don't recall the title
D
but I think I know the score
verse 6
G
And I feel like I'm being followed
Em
but I can't imagine why
C
because it all just seems so hollow
D
so very cut and dried
-chorus-

YEE-HAW!! It worked! Misanthrope, thank you.
Here's the story: I had written these lyrics almost twenty years ago. I always had the idea of the melody, but didn't learn enough music to put it together. Recently I found some old notebooks containing some of my writings from that time, among which was this song. Meanwhile, my group guitar class was given the assignment of writing an original song, anything from a four-bar shuffle on up, for the next week's class. Once I started thinking about it, I remembered this one. I got the chord progressions in maybe half an hour-okay, nineteen years and half an hour!

Thank you. I'm glad you like the lyrics. As for a recording, I intend to; however, it may take some time for me to put the technology together, as well as build my skill level a bit to smooth it out. My strumming is erratic, my tempo varies, and I can't flat-or fingerpick terribly well yet; and my singing? It's 60-grit sandpaper rough. (What a salesman I am!) But that is definitely where I'm headed. Hopefully by year's end I'll have something going.

My dear wife reminded me that we have a digital camera that has a movie mode  So the easiest way might be a video of me playing the song! I think Photobucket hosts videos. I don't know if I'm ready for Youtube. I'll keep you up to speed.

Wow.. that is really good. Would you mind terribly if I recorded that for my own pleasure? Of course, you could have a copy if you like.

Gonna play around with that when I get home.

Sure, I'll email you a standard contract ASAP
Seriously, I'd be honored if you want to play that at home. Maybe we could jam online with it sometime, after I get the gear? I don't have a mic, or any recording software, so that's going to take time. Work is slow now, and money is WAY tight-but that's another song :)

Excellent. Just and FYI. As for software, Audacity is more than good enough for recording and it is free. Krystal is another that is free and is pretty good, although I think its harder to get the hang of.

Mic.. Well, when I first started I just recording on the PC mic and it was ok. Behringer makes really good mics that are around $20. I know it feels intimidating at first, like you think its going to cost alot, but decent recordings can be done fairly cheap.

Let me know if I can help further with any of that info.

I think I'll have to buy a mic BC the only comp we have that has one built-in is the ancient IMac up in the boys' room, and it's not close to being web-ready. I would need to upgrade its memory, then its OS...too much work for me. $20 is managable, and free is even better! Thanks.

hi I have just found this song just now ..

And might I say it's very good , as I started reading it I got a Charlie Pride "Sanantone" hope you know that oldie but a goodie song ..if not
' Rain dripping off the brim of my hat
"Sure feels cold today "

And since you used chords that tis ol Fella can play I had a go at it but I didn't record it as I would never record someone elses work , as I can't play too good ...

I was picking the bass strings for each chord and then a little up / down / up strum which sort of sounded pretty good to me ..

cheers

Trev..

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Awesome. I've been thinking about a little running bass line myself; there's also an intro riff that's floating around in my head, but I haven't found it on the fretboard yet. Not even sure if it's chords or notes.
