About the Dakar rally, and with a brief nod to Lawrence Hacking whom I have a ton of respect for and who is the first Canadian to finish that insane test of human endurance.

A Long Way To Dakar

Out in the desert, all alone
Only tie is a satelitte phone
Heart's pounding, taste the fear
And there's no place you'd rather be than here

But it's a long way to Dakar and a longer way back
Spend fifteen days always on the attack
Sixty miles an hour, fighting with cars
Up on the pegs or you're over the bars

And that's the Dakar, that's how it goes
Haven't been sleeping but you're still on your toes
Paris, Dakar, and every inch in between
And it all feels worth it when you hear the crowd scream

Your mind's giving out, you've got no backing
You want to go home, but remember Mr. Hacking
He made it to Dakar, saw every day through
So suck it up, princess, and pay your dues

I know it's hard and I know it ain't easy
And I know there's times your stomach gets queasy
No shiny bike, no spare parts, no big support crew
But when it matters you pull it through

But it's a long way to Dakar and a longer way back
Spend fifteen days always on the attack
Sixty miles an hour, fighting with cars
Up on the pegs or you're over the bars

And that's the Dakar, that's how it goes
Haven't been sleeping but you're still on your toes
Paris, Dakar, and every inch in between
And it all feels worth it when you hear the crowd scream

No spare parts, no big trucks, no water carrier spare
But now it's all over, and now no one really cares
'Cause you're here in Dakar, better for worse win or lose
All that really matters, you know you saw it through

Ewan McGregor: I said, "Eve, I want you to look after my wedding ring while I'm away," and she started to cry and I said, "Eve. Eve, I can't wear my ring or I won't get laid on the trip!"

Howdy SGinCYQX. This is an interesting tribute song
I thought that race had been cancelled because of terroristic threats,
but it might have been the car race, not the motorcycle race.
Anyway, here's some suggestions:

Lawrence Hacking

Thanks lwj-I like how that flows better. This is why the songwriter's forum is great. :)

Yeah, sadly the 2008 Dakar was cancelled and for 2009 it's been moved to South America. No word yet on any name changes.

Lawrence finished in 2001 if I recall right, though, so the terrorist threat hadn't really surfaced at that point. I'd highly recommend his book (which I ripped the title off of) to anyone with even a passing interest in the Dakar.
