The Lonely Egg
My story begins with two young mallards
Max and Mildred, and what they did
Flew North at the end of winter
Choose each other and they made a kid
She picked a bush that would give good cover
Max stood guard while she cleared the ground… She thought
“I'm too young to be a motherâ€
Laid an egg and then skipped town
There was not a word of goodbye
She didn't whimper or cry, I got
A postcard later at my address
“To the egg in the abandoned nestâ€
She Wrote
I know what I did was wrong
When you're older you might see
This all happened for a reason
It's the way it's supposed to be
I'm all shell, yolk and albumin
My insides shake like jelly
I hope I get found by a human
Not end up in a raccoon's belly
I'm just lying here all alone
Wishing I had a home
….Won't you take me
Warm me up and incubate me
Be the first thing that I see
Imprint me with your love
I'll follow wherever you lead
I'll be your turtle dove
