There's a lot of possible fingerings. Here's one:

C# harmonic minor

-----------------------------------8-9-
------------------------------9-10-----
-----------------------8-9-11----------
-----------------11-12-----------------
---------9-11-12-----------------------
-9-11-12-------------------------------

Here's another way of looking at it.

C# pentatonic minor scale:

e|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|
B|-----|--1--|-----|-----|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|
G|--5--|-----|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|-----|-----|-b3--|
D|-----|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|-----|-b7--|
A|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|-----|-----|-b3--|-----|--4--|
E|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|

C# natural minor scale:

e|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|
B|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|
G|--5--|-b6--|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|
D|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-b7--|
A|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|
E|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-b7--|-----|--1--|

C# harmonic minor scale:

e|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|
B|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|
G|--5--|-b6--|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|
D|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-----|
A|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|
E|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-b6--|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|

C# melodic minor scale:

e|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|
B|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|
G|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|
D|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|
A|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-b3--|-----|--4--|
E|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|

Well, the notes in the E and C#m scales are the same, so you can use the same boxes. But you really should change your licks and riffs to fit the different key.

am i the only person in the music world who when someone says "X minor scale" thinks of the natural minor..

everyone takes "minor" to be harmonic minor, unless stated otherwise, i think it was the way i was introduced to music and major / minor scales..

if someone said "Play A minor" i would go..

A B C D E F G A... whereas everyone else would use the G#... anyone else think like me or not?

Alex: Don't we all use Natural minor as 'normal' minor?

Eg: as I said above, C#m have the same notes as E. If I was thinking of Melodic/Harmonic there would have been a faulty A# and/or C.

everyone in music history and everyone in my music college and all my teachers, guitar teachers, theory tutors do..

i think its a guitar thing.. to learn it like that, but the majority of the world would play a harmonic minor scale, as they see that as the "default" minor scale.

It's true that the harmonic minor scale gets much more use, so as you get into studying harmony, it's the 'default' minor scale.

Virtually all introductory courses on theory will teach the natural minor first - it's the one most closely related to the major scale, and it also follows the historic development of the scale. The other minor scales then follow as alterations of the natural minor.

As far as guitarists using the natural minor more than the harmonic minor, I think that's true as well - as a rule, the guitarists I meet are poorly educated in theory... and a lot of them are big on modes (a bad combination, in my opinion!). In addition, we tend to learn the pentatonic scale first, which has no alterations for minor - so a lot of guitarists assume the major/minor functions the same as the major pentatonic/minor pentatonic. I think this leads to guitar solos that rely on the natural minor more than the harmonic.

I think of the natural minor first.

Funny though, since you have Yngwie's pic! He probably thinks of the Harmonic minor before anything!
