when i play the guitar in public, when someone starts dancing to it, it always startles me for a second.

it always happens when i'm improvising, and for me, my mind has to be clear for me to improvise well, so getting startled always throws my focus off for a while.

how can i lessen this?

right now i usually try to avoid the problem by looking at the floor or somewhere off to the side.

Convince some friends or family to dance in the house when you play, you'll get used to it that way

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

I dont know...I was always told that to get the girls you needed to know how to either play guitar or dance, but not both. Especially not at the same time ;)

Our songs also have the standard pop format: Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, bad solo. All in all, I think we sound like The Knack and the Bay City Rollers being molested by Black Flag and Black Sabbath.

I guess the point is you should work on not being distracted.
People dancing to your music is a great compliment (My distraction is people leaving the room when I play)
If it helps picture them in their underwear

When you sat play the guitar in public, what exactly do you mean.

I am picturing your sitting down on a park bench in the middle of a fiel;d and all of a sudden people start flocking to you and dancing like Hari Krshna's at the airport

that's usually how it happens.

no, i mean when i'm playing my guitar on break at work, or sitting on a bench waiting for the bus or something.

other wierd stuff that happens includes when my band's in the pocket, the piano player's dog always wanders in.

i just find that when i'm playing, my mind seems to lose it's gravity, able to be blown around like a balloon in the wind, like my thoughts weigh only a few grams.

I can think of two remedies.

Turn around so you are facing away from the dancers. It helps to stick out and shake your butt (I have done this many times) :D

Just stop playing suddenly and stare at them with a look of disgust.

The first method will not make them stop dancing, but it is pretty sick.

The second method will make them stop dancing for sure.

Both methods will make you happy.

That was my thought.

I'll add, GET OVER IT!!! If people are dancing and you have a problem with it, have someone else fill your spot. That way you can see first hand how much fun your replacement is having from everyone enjoying the music.

What can I say, I am who I am.......

That is something I would say to myself as well. It's in your head and the only way to get out of it is to say something to that effect to yourself.

That's the way I deal with things. It sounds rude, but try saying it to yourself.

Say, "If I can't do it, someone else can. If I can do it, they won't need someone else".

It's a head thing.
