Hey all,

I recently aquired a les paul custom and am interested in finding some stuff about it, I was told there is a site where you type the serial number into and it tells you the history, and what it's worth. If any of this sounds familiar let me know. A few people told me its worth a lot but I'm not too sure, but want to know if I should put insurance on it or not.

Thanks

Mike

Hi and welcome to GN.

No mate, Gibson Les Pauls are worthless. I'll give you £50 to take it off your hands and I'll be doing you a favour. :) :D :D

Not sure how you are getting on in your quest for information but a quick googie came up with these two links (amongst many others).

http://www.gibson.com/Service/Serial%20Numbers%20Search/
http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html#col

I'm not sure these links will help you put a value on your guitar per se, but they will give you a plenty of information to work with. I guess you would need to speak to a dealer to get a proper idea of value.

Maybe if you could post a phot on here some Gibson afficionados (sp?) may be able to help. Besides we all like looking at pictures of guitars.

As for insurance, it's not a bad idea to insure all your gear anyway - you never know. If you do have a particulalry valuable instrument though it may increase your premiums.

Good luck in your search for info and let us know how you get on.

And congrats on your "acquisition". I'd quite like to acquire one of those. :)

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.
It was them that turned me to drink.

Welcome to GN Mike!

I can't help you with the site you're looking for, but I did want to say congrats on the LP! 8)

Is there any way to submit the serial number on an Epiphone to find out where it was made, the specification, ie wood and pups and what the new price would have been? I have an Epi that seems quite a decent guitar and can't find anything about it.

Thanks,

Gary UK

Hi from one Mike to another!

I think this is the link you were thinking of... don't forget the little link at the bottom of the page where you can download a .pdf with all the vintage serial nos. and information. Goes back to 1903  - a little before they brought out the LP Custom!

Many congrats, by the way, on one of the classic guitars of all classic guitars! What colour is yours? Not a black beauty, by any chance? (He said, turning a delicate shade of green  )

I have, but not with me, a download about Epihone and it's histroy.
here is a section that has dating info.

I should be able to date electric and acoustic Epis, but not new ones.

as far as dating Les Pauls.
Ive read in numerous sources that Gibson wasnt too careful about serial numbers.

shipping lists are a good way to date them.

Gruhns Guitars seems to have a handle on dating Gibson.
try a search of that web site.
