I'm looking for a resource that can point out by model which strats use the "universal" routing (the big rectangular cavity for pickups" vs. the "standard" routing (just enough wood cut away to fit 3 pickups and the wiring).

I know as a general rule all american and japanese models use the standard routing, but the mexicans for example use both.

So mainly focused on the import strats, which use which?

Any ideas?

Can't help you specifically, but the common term for the rectangular route is bathtub route. Doing a search on this with Strat might yield something.

I've heard it referred to as the "swimming pool" route, incidentally.

This is so easy to check, I'd probably just pop open any strat I was considering buying to check. Gotta be detailed with these things. That' also why I refuse to buy a guitar off ebay. Too many things you can't see in pictures.

Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life...
