Hey everybody...
I went to the guitar center a few weeks ago to try out a few electrics, but I only had a few minutes, so I only tried out the Fender Stratocaster, and an out of tune Epipophone Les Paul. I was wondering if anybody had any reccomendations (no clue how to spell that :D ). I have been playing for 'bout 10 months now, it will be about a year by the time I get the money. I like to play Beatles, John Mayer, Green Day, AC/DC (which doesn't sound the best on an acoustic :) ), an want to try out some blues stuff, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimi Hendrix. Any opinions would be great!!! Thanks!!! 8) 8)

If you like blues, a strat might be the way to go, a SG, or Les Paul could work either. I'd say tune up the Epi, and try it out. Epiphone Les Pauls are great guitars. There is a thread below this you should check out.

It's hard to say really, without knowing your budget.

Just a tip, you should look at buying used. You can pick up a great guitar for a decent price if you no where to look for a used one.

Epiphone, Fender, Ibanze, Godin, Scheter, all those brands and many more make great, affordable guitars. Try out what you can, and narrow down the field to ones that feel good, and "talk" to you. If you find a guitar that makes you want to play, then that's a good choice.

Good Luck,

Paul

$600, (USD I guess,) can get you a good guitar. An Epiphone Casino, a Nashville Deluxe Tele, Deluxe Player Strat. Either of those would be a great guitar to check out.

Standard Fender Strat or Squire Fender Strat.

The Squire Strat is quite popular and some even argue that it sounds better than Fenders of equal price range.

I have one word for you...... Telecaster!!! Strats are cool, but the Tremelo may cause you grief (I hate em). You can probably find a decent made in america tele for under $600 on ebay. If you opt for the MIM or MIJ version, my advice is to spend about $100 on the neck with a luthier who will float and crown the frets and set up the action on the low side. Fact is, most of the mass produced guitars made in mexico or japan are pretty damn decent, but they dont spend as much time hand crafting the frets. Floating frets (makes sure they're perfectly level) and crowning the frets will give you buttery smooth playability. One of my alltime favorite guitars was a made in japan strat with the above mentioned enhancements (still hated the tremelo, I never put it on). Check out Teles! A Tele body is small, comfortable, has versatile pick up configurations available, and IMHO one of the best guitars for anyone to learn on. So good, many top players swear by the Tele's magic 8) Play as many guitars as loudly as you can, on as many amp settings as you can (gritty over drive and clean) before you decide. Have fun!

I'll second the Tele recommendation, but in that price range, take a look at the G&L Tribute ASAT. I got one as my second Tele, and it's become my #1 go to guitar.
