I know there are a lot of variations of this riff, but the one I am referring to is Paul Hackett's version on this site. Here is the link: https://www.guitarnoise.com/lessons/easy-guitar-riffs/

Sorry to sound so elementary, but is there a "proper" way to play this? Should it be played as a "barre" or as a two finger (either 1-2 or 2-3) chord?

Any help is appreciated.

KC

I would play it with a barre, but I don't see either method as bad technique whatsoever.

FWIW I play it with a barre. I find it easier. YMMV.

of course you can play it as you prefer, but I guess that Ritchie Blackmore used inverted power chords which are simpler to play than the regular ones (see the excellent power chord lesson on this site https://www.guitarnoise.com/lessons/threes-a-crowd-part-2/ ). Also he played it with right hand fingers only (no pick, just picking the strings with thumb and middle finger)

Cheers

I read this somewhere and if you listen to the recording you can hear that is what he is doing. I'd play it however you think it sounds cool though. Why not a mix of both?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I tried it last night "plucking" the strings (Blackbird style) with my thumb and middle finger and it sounded pretty decent. I used a simple barre with index, ring and pinkie fingers with it.

Matteo, I will try the inverted power chords and see how that works.

TR, I like your idea too. It doesn't "have" to sound like Blackmore, but I don't want to butcher it either and have people looking at me like "What the h***?"

Thanks again,
KC
