can anyone tell me a starting pay estimate for a studio musician? it doesnt have to be exact

They have to pay at least scale wages under the AFM contract.  There's lots of categories, and special rules for stuff like 're-uses' (when you record a radio commercial, they have to pay you again to run it for a second 13 weeks), 'upgrades' (when you record a radio jingle, then they use the same recorded track in a TV commercial), doubles (when you play a second instrument on the same date -- and yes, 12 strings, classicals, etc. count as doubles!).

There's also different rates for different gigs -- one set for TV, one for radio, one for jingles, etc.

For a rough idea, if you do a 3 hour recording session as a sideman, the rate is $329.32... but they can't record more than 15 minutes worth of your playing in those 3 hours, or you get more $.

For a jingle, they can book as little as 1 hour, and the rate right now is $106.
