Is there a rule of thumb for trade-in evaluations? That is an average percentage of retail value if still in good condition? I'd like to have some idea before I go into the store.

In my experience, you're lucky to get half of what you paid for it.
Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
There is a "blue book" for guitars, just as there is for cars, but the bottom line (no pun intended) is that, monetary-wise, a guitar is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.
The retailer is going to give you as little as possible and try to sell it for as much as possible. You're usually better of selling something yourself rather than trying to trade it in.
Peace

I agree, your best bet is to sell it yourself. They will try to lowball you to no end.
Another point, some people (maybe you in this case) think they have a great piece because they've owned it and have grown attached to it (not saying your axe isn't good). The problem with that is, if you try a trade in, the sales person could care less how much you liked it. All they care about is the money they will get for it.
I vote for selling it on the side.
Either way, Good luck,
Mike
It's all about will it resell.
I've got a good contact at my local GC and when I get the urge to get a new guitar we work something out. Generally with a used trade I get all but $100 or $200 of what I paid.

Thats amazing. Usually I'm lucky to get back that much

I bought a used Breedlove SC20K for about $1300 and traded it back in for $1200.
It's much harder to get that close when you buy new.
It's a used one I'm thinking of letting go. Actually the Guild D4 a-e dreadnought. I guess the best strategy is to go talk to the guy and if I don't like what I'm hearing, I'll post it in the Swap meet. Unless someone has a better idea?

What did you pay for it used?
US475 plus shipping and taxes and it's been repaired/professionally set-up since then. I hate the thought of letting it go, but I'm running out of cash/room for a lapsteel.

What was the repair and I'll give you an idea of it's value.
fret dress, the end wiring, and the battery compartment which was flopping about. Hmm, I'm beginnning to talk myself out of this, but I do't know how to deal with the space issue. But yes, please give mean an estimate. :)
