i got a free guitar from my dads friend at work. it was originally a 12 string, converted to a 6 string. theres no markings on the headstock, the only markings are on the back, saying made in japan and a serial number. its got a bolt on neck and a wood bridge. heres some pics.

the only problem with it is the string height is extremely high, and the bridge is adjusted all the way down. could i shimmy up the neck without throwing off the intonation so bad that it couldnt be set?

Wow, that is high action. :D

It is possible you could tighten the truss rod to bring your action down. Loosen all strings until they are very slack. Then turn the truss rod clockwise in small increments, maybe 1/8 turn at a time. Then tune to pitch and check the string height. It may take you several adjustments.

You may have to lower the pickups as well, they look very close to the strings.

If the neck is very straight already, then yes, perhaps you can use some thin shims to change the neck angle. Something is definitely off on that guitar.

Congrats on the free guitar. Who knows, with a little tweaking it might be a real keeper.

Wes pointed out some important things; action, pickup heigh, and so on. Maybe take it to a shop to get a setup if it's worth the money for you. It looks real nice too. It reminds me of my free Hagstrom, pretty much just because it was old and free though.

If you can't get the action down enough you can always use it for a slide guitar :D I bet it would sound wicked with a slide and open G tuning

The guitar is definitely an Aria Diamond, Japanese made late 60s, and I would guess it might be worth a few bucks
it's a 1212 model I believe.
there's a similar one, 6 string tho, here that sold for $375

I'd suggest the 12 was much rarer
this guy seems interested but has no info

you could try contacting Aria

nice ax.

take it to a nice shop or builder and have that set up proper.
and return it to tweleve strings right away.
it will blow you away.

and I agree with the maker comments.

congrats on the find. Free stuff is always fun. I would definatly convert it back to 12 strings as well.
