I have just started switching over to a heavy pick from a medium and was wondering if most players gravitate towards a heavier pick the longer they play. I've been at it only for about two years, but heard somewhere that the more experienced players tend towards a heavier pick. Neil Young being a notable exception.

How long have you been playing and what type of pick do you use (even brand, if that's an issue with you)

Thanks,

Julius

I've been playing for 2-3 months, and I use 1mm and 0.7mm picks, cheap ones. (tearshaped)

I've been playing for 2.5 years and my preferred pick is a yellow Dunlop.

It's all about personal preference... I use anything between 0.66 or 1 millimetre picks, usaully the green tortex ones (which are 0.88's, i think). I like the thicker to medium sized picks, and because i'm used to them that's all i use.

This guy I knew used to play with ridiculously small and thin picks (when i used them, it was like i was playing guitar with a peice of paper, lol), but he liked them and play reasonably well.

Picks are like guitar strings: it all depends on what you like in terms of sound, feel, etc. I like thick strings and picks, partly because thicker strings are a challenge to play compared to smaller ones.

Oh, and i've been playing about 8 years or so in case you wondered.

I use a medium pick, but I use a really small pick, about the size of a fingernail, so not as much flex as a larger pick of the same weight

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

I use Dunlop gels, green, about .6mm thick...these are my "preferred" picks.

But depending on my mood I use anything from paper-thin .46 Match-Piks to heavy Fenders.

Orange Dunlop most of the time, but I'll use heavy Fenders if I need a more aggressive sound.

Playing for a long time on and off.

I like a few different kind of picks but mostly use Fender Tortoise shells. I use the thin, medium and heavy depending on what I am doing and how heavy my hand is that day. If I am real heavy handed I use a thinner pick to make up for the too heavy of an attack.

When I'm just strumming chords, I like very thin picks because I feel they have more control over the volume. But when I'm playing single notes, I play with thick picks. For instance, right now I have a blue 1.0mm Dunlop I'm playing around with.
