I just purchased a used MIM Telecaster via Ebay. Although I got it at a fairly decent price, the guitar has some issues. All the strings buzz on the first fret. My guess is that it came with a set of 9's or possibly 8's, super light. Should I try restringing it with a heavier gauge set of strings to see if that solves the problem? I do plan on taking it to a local luthier to give it a complete set-up, but he is currently backed up by a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unless you want strings that light, put on, say, some 10s and see how it works. My guess is it came with those and someone put the super lights on without adjusting the truss rod.

You're welcome.

And if it is in need of a truss rod adjustment, that's not rocket science either. There are lots of good tutorials online. I usually point folks to http://frets.com/ for setup instructions, even if it is an acoustic guitar site.
