What's some of the best, safest stuff out there? I ask this because I've read some of the supposed "good stuff" can actually ruin your fretboard.

So I thought I'd ask here, of course. :)

Also, is it fine to use it while your strings are on there? And would I be better off doing it before I make string changes (I typically remove one string at a time when changing strings, I don't remove them all at once.) Common sense would say do it before you change the strings, since the fretboard cleaner could harm your new strings.

Thanks.

Hey Kev :D

There's a thread a little furthur down in this guitar and maintenance section
called baby mineral oil etc...

That has some ideas on fretboard conditioning.

And sure, do it with the old strings on before you make the change.

Thanks, Ken.

I do have a maple fretboard (Squier '51, pretty sure it's maple)...so what kind of polish would you suggest exactly?

Well, I've never actually seen a 51 or the specs and options....
Though all the ones I've seen posted here have Maple boards (which were all they had in the 50's).

They are a light color - the same as the back of the neck.

Anyway, it would more than likely have a urethane finish on it.
You could just use a good furniture polish for it.
Whatever's in the cabinet for dusting the tables will work.

Oil will do nothing for finished maple, as the finish prevents the wood from absorbing it.

Mmm I see...I've read that a moist towel would also do the job. You agree with that?

Thanks again, KEn. I really appreciate it.

I suppose that would work.
I would hate to recommend it and have your frets rust out

I'm getting the feeling that you're wanting to ask something a bit more specific....?

I could be wrong, I'll try a little leading here -

Is there something specific you're trying to clean on your fretboard????
Or are you just trying to keep it well maintained....?

I'm just trying to keep it well maintained. It's getting a little more ruff, much more than it did when I started out playing a guitar. I assume that's because I haven't cleaned it once in four months.
