Hi, I read that to check that the neck of a guitar is not warped, to press a string down at each end of the fingerboard and it should touch all of the frets. Is this how a guitar should be set-up? My guitar does not do this - there's space between the string and most of the frets (except maybe 1 or 2 frets from where I'm pressing).

Do I need to get the truss rod tightened to straighten the neck of my guitar?

Thanks,
Tyler

The strings should NOT touch all the frets. There should be a very slight concave bend to the neck. The bend will be greatest around the 8th fret, where the space should be about 0.010" which is about the thickness of a high E string or a playing card, if you dont have a good ruler. This space allows for string vibration.
You may require a slightly larger space if you have an aggressive picking technique. Otherwise, you would need an uncomfortably high action, or string height as adjusted at the bridge, in order to avoid fret buzz.
