I've heard a lot of people say that removing the backplate on a Strat (the part that covers the trem cavity) is a tonal improvement. Can anyone explain why this is? I'm just curious.
I personally remove the backplate but only because I think it looks dumb with it on there. I also install 5 springs and block the trem with a wedge of wood.

I remove mine just because it makes the guitar quite a bit louder when I'm playing unplugged late at night. The open cavity acts like the soundhole on an acoustic, just on the back of the guitar. Plugged in, I notice a little difference (kind of like the sound is freed up - hard to explain), but this could be in my head.
