I thought I'd put a link up to this. It was done off the back of another forum but it would be good to get some honest opinions. I'm attempting to cover Oasis's Wonderwall. The guitar part isnt to difficult but trying to sing as well proved a real struggle. There are lines in the song that I just cant sing no matter how hard I try or practice. If youve seen my previous videos you'll know I cant sing but I have enjoyed having a go and it makes playing easy songs more intresting. I had been trying to record it for about 3 weeks back in early May but I had to leave it a while as the more I tried the worse it was getting. I gave it ago again a couple of weeks ago, just ran through it once and then recorded it. It shows alot of the problems i have, such as trying to keep singing higher and higher, voice faltering and poor phrasing. I would prefer brutal honesty if possible.

Hey Justin! Brutal honesty? Well, that's not my business, but I care to comment when people ask, and have seen fellow guitar solo/singers as "family" for nearly 40 years. Of course you weren't around then.

First, great guitar! Nice strumming and rhythm, wonderful tone. I don't know the tabs to this familiar song, but wondered if you were in too low of a key - it just seemed that way for your voice. Practice, using a capo maybe.

Anyhow, your singing is okay. The principal issue that I see (or hear, ha ha, :D ) is a very common thing, and I may not express it that well, because I am not pro.

Whatever it is, can happen so often, and usually does happen when we begin singing. You appear to be singing with the air in your lungs, or from the chest (and larynx/voicebox, of course) but not using the diaphragm enough.

The diaphragm is right under your lungs and should be used like the squeezebox part of an accordian to push out all that you have to express, to add the ups & downs, inflection, and volume. We all need air in our lungs at the same time however - the diaphragm will regulate how it passes over the vocal cords, or voice instrument, also like blowing into a harmonica over the reeds.

I have tried in my way to be free.

I've got the same problem, so I feel ya there.

I've been working on singing for over a year now, and while I've made progress, it's not where I thought that it would be, it's not going to stop me though LOL.

One of the things that I did to kind of help me out was to hold my nose when I sing to see how big of a pitch change I got. If I pinched my nose and the sound changed drastically I was singing from the wrong area, but if there wasn't I knew I was at least getting close to good technique. I also practiced opening up that soft pallet a bit more (kind of like yawning) while singing, and just doing it in general because it's a weird feeling at first.

Good luck man!

In Space, no one can hear me sing!
