As I'm very new around here I don't know if you only like to hear "normal" guitar music, but I guess I'll soon find out!

Normally I produce electronic music using synthesisers. Since I'm learning the guitar now (with a focus on blues) I thought it would be interesting to try and make an ambient track with it, using some of the techniques I'd normally use for synths.

You can find the track "Painted Red" at http://www.gwydi.com in the Music section, it's free to stream or download. Feedback via the site or here is welcome!

I'm happy to share how the effects were done if anybody's interested.

Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to show off some "real" music here too

Take care,
Gwydi

Hey gwydi, any music is welcome here, we have folks from around the globe here and while rock/blues /folk music seems to be the favorite here , i think most of us are open minded to new things. Yours is very "GROOVY" 8) 8) :D some of us are starting to do collaborations over the net, maybe you could lend a hand with some effects :?: The space intro to a certain steve miller tune comes to mind :D welcome to GN-the dog

I'd be happy to collab with anybody, music is definitely better when shared :) My setup is based around Sonar 4 although more and more I find myself using Tracktion.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance though, and tell me exactly which Steve Miller track you're thinking of so I can listen to it.

Thanks,
Gwydi

I just bought Sonar4 and have messed around with it a little bit but, not enough to know all the in's and out's.

So far I'm recording guitars and vocals and my question is, why do you use Tracktion more? Is it because you do more Midi stuff?

New to recording, any help is welcome!!!

Pretty awesome. I didnt listen to all of it because I can never actively listen to a full ambient song. But it was good. I really like all your other stuff too.

OK, I've had a listen to it now. Most of the trickery in this is just a simple delay with a high feedback setting, so you get multiple fading delays. Then it's all about getting the original sound you feed into it as you want it.

The "whooshing" noises are standard synth fare.

So yeah, I could reproduce this :)

Actually Sonar is probably better for Midi stuff, it has far better midi editing, although Tracktion 2 has helped a lot (but it's not available until at least May).

The reason I've pretty much switched to Tracktion full-time is it's just so fast and easy to work with. Whereas you can spend several minutes booting something like Sonar, adding tracks, setting up your recording sources, etc (by which time the moment of inspiration you had has passed), with Tracktion you can be up and recording in under 30 seconds. It's just incredibly intuitive to use, both for the initial recording and then for mixing, editing, adding effects, and so on.

Naturally it lacks features that the "big boys" have, but for recording guitars and vocals they're features you'd probably never use anyway. Apparently there are also issues if you try to make single recordings several hours long, but since that has been identified I'm sure it will get fixed.

I'd really recommend giving Tracktion a run - you can download a demo version from http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion2/

There's also an excellent community for it at http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=22 although right now there's lots of people whining about the features they wanted in T2 but didn't get, so read it with a grain of salt.

Anyway I can help with either Sonar or Tracktion so if you've got questions, fire away.

Thank you, I might have to take you up on that.

My cousin is coming over this weekend to finish one of the songs we've been working on. I'm on vocals and lead guitar and he is rhythem (spelling?) guitar. Hopefully we'll be able to record It all in one shot together. Then I'll have to find a way to add the drums in.......with out accually having drums. :?

I can definitely help you with that or show you ways to do it (using prerecorded loops, or programming drums manually).

A piece of advice; if at all possible, record using a metronome so that your timing is tight, that will make adding drums a lot easier.

Feel free to contact me directly for this or other questions - guitar at elderwyn dot com.

I'm not an ambient expert  but I love listening to the stuff. I really liked yours. Very relaxing too. Nearly dozed off at my desk.
