Well, i asked the question in the discussion forum and got lots of useful help.
since then i have had my head buried in my guitar or on the internet looking at examples of people using the major scale.

if i am honest, it took about an hour to put this together - because i am not yet familiar enough with the scale to improvise - so this really is probably the best i could do.

i hope it is more musical and melodic than other things i have posted.

what i am hoping for is for people who know the major scale well to look at this and comment on the way i have approached using the scale - is it suitable??

i have tried to keep things slower and more simple to emphasise target notes, i hope it has worked (and that i used the right notes  )

anyway, this is the last video i will be able to post before christmas (when hopefully there will be more improvement), so, please be critical and harsh - if you think something needs saying, say it (im not easily offended :D ).

anything you can spot will be great and well recieved as it will give me something to work on over the next few months.

thanks.

Al

edit - i should have said, i realise there is a short blues section in there also, this is not me getting confused about the scale, just me wanting to put a little blues section in so i could compare how the 2 sound next to each other.

I found this video in the side bar. I think he accomplishes what you were trying. to my ears his phrases are more tuneful than yours. (that is a sad truth with my licks; there is always someone doing it better and the way I wanted to turn out).
Allman, thanks, this is an interesting topic. BTW, your playing has improved a lot lately. vitamins?

well - if fish and chips contain vitamins - i have been having a lot of takeaways this last few weeks :D

i saw that link as well and he is superb - it is what i am aiming for - what i like about his video is that he step by step explains the thought processes he went through making that solo - very useful.

i will spend the next few months working hard on this, and although it will be years before i can come up with stuff as well sounding as the guy in the other link, i hope i can use my new way of looking at the fretboard to at least get some way there.

i am beginning to realise now that players see the fretboard and approach soloing in a huge number of different ways - it really is an eye opener.

anyway, ill work hard and repost another at christmas, maybe a more rocky track and hopefully there will be a good "before and after" difference between the two vids.

thanks for watching dogbite and for the comment. much appreciated.

I think you will get on brilliantly and well before Christmas.
the more music I listen to the more I understand now that I made it a priority to understand the fretboard in new ways.
getting involved with lap steel guitars tuned to different tunings caused me to 'see' the strings, notes, intervals and patterns
in other ways. now, when I play my strat, standard tuning, my fingers are going to the places on the fretboard they hadn't seen before.
it's a cool feeling. Allman, you know what I mean.

Nice job! Any more when recording a solo I will almost always go to You-tube for this kind of advice :D Damn...I wish we had this kind of resource when I was a teen  I was 13 years old in 1971. I lived across the street from the local community center. Every Thursday then held a "Teen Night". For a $1 cover charge they had a real rock band (some were pretty good). I would pay my $1 and sit in front of the band to watch every thing the guitar player did. Some guitarists would even show me stuff and give advice during the break. I'm pretty sure Randy can relate to this :D

Good job. Nice to see the vid too. (The one Dogbite linked to looks well worth a watch as well. Bookmarked it for later... :) )

After 3 or 4 years as a basic campfire style chord strummer I've only recently thought about tackling playing leads - and you're way ahead of me. Unfortunately this means that I may have to come around and nobble your guitar, to thin out the competition a bit.... but you made it look like you were enjoying yourself there, and moving around pretty freely. Good one... :)

Cheers,

Chris

Hey! I missed this thread and this video!

It sounds very good. I was reading some of the posts in the others threads. I think you are getting what the guys say. Well done!
