I think it was boxboy who turned me on to this song. Well, a cover of it anyhow, by Tony Joe White. I heard it a week or two back on XM radio by Brook Benton. Actually sounds like a song Sammy Davis Jr would have been great at. I digress. Back to the post.

I've been trying to "let my voice ring out", as has been suggested. No one in the house except the evil cat, the nice cat and the sweet adorable doggies. Soooo, I tested it out with this small chorus part. Working on the rest of the song's arrangement, so it's quite incomplete. There's a spot or two where I let it out, so to speak. Chorus not even fully worked out yet, as you'll hear. Short clip, something like 25 seconds.

I found a few chord sheets last night and am combining arrangements into one this afternoon. I think I've settled on the chorus though.

Hey Roy!

Nice initial version. Are you preparing the rest of the song? I'll keep reading!

Thanks.

Yes, I'm preparing for the rest. It's one of those songs that came to life as a full band song complete with a horn section. Quite a challenge to turn it into a single guitar arrangement that does end up as a strummy campfire song. I'll be working on this for some time. That Tony Joe White fellow did. I could always copy him if all else fails.

great song.
when you sing in a low voice you have to push the air harder.
the voice doesn't reach it's tonal quality without enough air behind it.
you are on pitch, but the voice sounds weak and undefined.
don't sing sitting down bent over your guitar looking at the fretboard. no no.
stand up, push more air. believe. and sing.
this is an emotional song. it is bittersweet.
air and feeling Roy and it'll be killer.

Thanks for the input! Most valuable to me.

I think I've settled on the chords, just working out the timing issues, and chord voicings and such. There's a bridge section to the song that's twisting my toungue and guitar up into a big globby mess. It's something I'll work on off and on for quite a while. If I wanted to just do full chord strumming, I could be done. Good practice for making other noises from this guitar thing.

The tempo from most recorded versions are a bit more up-tempo. I slowed it down a touch and will probably continue doing so.

RE-vocals: I'm quite torn. It's a high output vocal song except for the version by Tony Joe White. I played that version when wifey-poo was in here and she said he needed to stop mumbling and start singing. I think I was going for that effect except for a couple points during the vocal where I tried to let it out.....believe it or not. :D

This whole learning music thing is loads of fun. I don't think I've said that yet today.
