OK now I've got a keyboard that I'm trying to record, I've laid down my guitar tracks and all that, and I'm trying to playback while I record the keyboard. It seems impossible to listen to the recorded stuff and the part I'm playing at the same time???

I have tap-out going to my PC sound card, and the soundcard going into tape-in. the main-out then goes to my home stereo which I use as a monitor. Problem is, the control room switch either turns the monitors on (input off) or the monitors off (input on) so I can only listen to one at a time. Anyway to re-route and bypass this problem? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

I have the monitor amp connected to ctrl room out on the mixer and soundcard output connected to tape in on the mixer. Main out on mixer is connected to Soundcard line in.
With Tape to ctrl room button (on the mixer) pressed in I can listen to the recorded sound (from the soundcard) and the instrument I am playing at the same time.

Thanks again for your help Kalle, i'll try this. Correction - I actually do have cntrl room out going to my monitors, but i'm going from tape-out to soundcard line-in. I'll switch this from tape-out to main-out and should fix my problem :)

What Kalle said: this will also allow you to set both the recording and playback volume independantly, and prevent phasing problems of putting an old signal back in the loop.

i'm still having a problem here - for all those familiar with the ub802 mixer. What i am trying to do is record a track, then play it back while recording another track - in doing this i want to be able to monitor both the track i am recording and the pre-recorded track at the same time, but only record the new track. make sense?

wow, i was able to solve my problem from the recording software! Cakewalk Sonar has an 'input echo" button on each track right next to the record "R" button. When this is set to "on" on one track, you can monitor this track while recording to another track and monitor the new inputs as well, but only your new inputs are recorded to the new track, really neat stuff!

Seems like you should be able to wire the mixer to do so as well though, maybe through FX send/return? Well, I'll just use the software for now........

Hi Kachman
With my setup of the mixer and using KAE (kristal audio engine) I am doing extacly what you are trying to achive.
I.e. Playbacking one or several tracks and recording a new track simultainously without any delay(latency) between the original tracks and the new track.
And I have done the same with Sonar 2.

You would use FX send/return to link additional devices to your setup, like reverb units.

I go from my mixer into my interface (CD/Tape out (RCA)), then from my interface back into my mixer (CD/Tape input (RCA)). From there I control the playback through my (mixer) input standby switch and CD/Tape return. I also use the Main Outs for my monitors.

This is all with Sonar4 so the difference might be in the softwares settings. Also, double check your playback settings to in your "Audio Properties". Make sure that is set properly.

With the keys, I would suggest getting a MIDI output device. Maybe one with audio capabilities as well so you can by-pass your soundcard all together. With the MIDI device, you can send effects from Sonar (or a plug-in) through your MIDI back into your keys and have some pretty funky sounds at your finger tips. 8)

Hi Kalle, Latency is not my worry here - are you able to recor the new track by itself (while monitoring both the new track being recorded an the track being played back) without overubbing the new track unto the track you are playing back?

Hi Kachman
Yes, I "arm" the "old" tracks for playback and the new track for recording and then I start recording. I can then hear the playback from the "old" tracks and the input to the new track.
I find more straight forward to do in KAE than in Sonar 2.
