I want to record some acoustic and electric stuff onto my pc, currently have a standard 7.1 sound card that came with my pc, a $50 omnidirectional dynamic(?) mic and the free Audacity recording download. The results so far sound very small and distant with my acoustic and i havent even attempted to plug in my electric...

Could you guys recommend what to upgrade first??? I also have to plug in my mic through an adapter, will this decrease the quality... so far recording on my crappy lil mp3 and on my digital cameras mic sound better!

Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

This will do for now. You should get pretty reasonable results with this.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-Eurorack-UB802-Mixer?sku=631238
you will need this to hook it up to the sound card

Also be sure to plug the mixer into the Audio input NOT the mic input :D

How far away is the mic on the acoustic? Try placing the mic at the 12th fret about 6 or 7 inches away.

Other than that, you should be able to mess with your soundcards mixer and get somewhat decent results.

When you mic the electric, put the mic either, right up to the speaker (offset center alittle) or a few inches away in the center.

Experiment........

The mic input of standard PC Soundcards is crap, but the line input is OK.
So if you add a Mixer ( UB802 or similar) with a good mic input amplifier in front of the Soundcards line input you should be OK for most home recordings.
I am using the Behringer XM 8500 mic http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-XM8500-Microphone?sku=270490
with a good result.
But recording acoustic guitar (or other similar string instruments) with a mic is always a bit tricky. The distance and placement of the mic relative the Guitar is critical and needs alot of set up and recording tests.

Tanglewood TW28STE (Shadow P7 EQ) acoustic
Yamaha RGX 320FZ electric guitar/Egnater Tweaker 15 amp.
Yamaha RBX 270 bass/Laney DB 150 amp.

Try going to the behringer web site, they should have a down under outlet :D The sound lab mixer would be OK if you can get a good price.

Sounds much better now... :)

Just messed with it for an hour or so and have the basic functions figured out. My acoustic sounds much better, not perfect by any means but i can actually hear it...

Only prob is the hissy noise when i record which builds and builds if i try to overlay tracks...

It seems to get a little better when i unplug my crappy speaker but not much.

Now to try the electric... :o

This is what you need to connect the mixer to the line in. If your using the phones out put to the line in you will get some hiss.

what are you connecting the mic to ( what kind of mic are you using) --the dog

The hiss is there exaxctly the same when i plug my electric into the mixer. I am using the 'Line in 1' for my guitar and mic. I have the lead to my 'line in' coming from 'main out' mono.

The hiss was there before i had the mixer so it must be my pc... maybe i need a soundcard?

I would only need a basic sound card because i dont use my pc for a stereo or dvd player...

Cheers.

First thing..Your mic or guitar is hooked up to your" line in 1" thats good :D
Now..you should have the"line in" on your PC sound card connected to the Right and left "tape out" on the mixer. you will need a special jack for this (a right and left RCA or phono jack( 2 of them) that will have a 1/8 in. stereo jack on the other end that plugs into the sound card.

You already have a basic stereo sound card in your PC thats good enough for now 8)
