I have saved my nickles and dimes for a new sound card. I think I want to go with the m-audio firewire http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FirewireAudiophile-main.html
What do you guys think? any reason not to go with this one? I want to hook up a mixer and use audacity to start out then upgrade my software later. would I have any problems just playing my mp3 files and stuff of my windows meadia player? Thanks --the dog
I've been using the M-Audio Firewire Audiophile for 6 months or so. It's the first "proper" soundcard I've had and it works really well. I'm new to recording and have a budget set-up with a couple of condenser mics, a Behringer UB1204-PRO mixer, Audiophile, Cubase SE software and a pair of Edirol MA-7A monitor speakers. The results are very much better than I was able to achieve before. I use the system for playback of all my sound files.
Go get it!
I've said it before, but I'll explain why.
I bought the M-AUDIO Mobile Pre USB audio interface. I bought it because I have a laptop and when I go to either of my friend's house I can hook it up to their pc and bring my mixer, mics and cables etc. I can also bring my laptop (even easier).
It is a “mobile†audio interface at a nice price. There are better and there are worse out there.
The other reason is that is so simple to use, plus you just plug it in and download the drivers (same with soundcard, but without having to open up the pc). You also have the option to still use your existing card for other tasks if you want.
I figured I would throw in my cheap 2 cents.
Thanks guys, I just orderd it from MF, I got it for 169.95 ( its listed for 199.00 but zounds has it for 169.00, so MF matched the price :D ) so thats $30.00 towards my next G.A.S. attack   I'll let you know how it works out. I'll yell for help if I need it LOL--the dog
Ok, i got my m-audio firewire set up. after some head scratching i got it to play and it sounds good. 2 problems, 1, I can't seem to play midi files ( I went in to the controls and set the midi output to the firewire). 2, when I tried to record a 4 track tape from my tascam to audacity the leval is low and its distorted at times ( not to bad, but it should sound a lot better) :? :? Any Ideas :?: --thanks, the dog
PS-number9, Once you have the firewire pluged into the computer is it ok to turn off the m-audio device without turning off the computer :?:
EDIT: I notice that when I power down the firewire unit that I lost my setings when i turned it back on. Can i just leave it on 24/7, the unit seems to stay cool. :?
I don't have any MIDI devices but import MIDI files from my guitar tab software. In Cubase I select MS GS Wavetable SW Synth to playback - selecting M-Audio doesn't work- I've never bothered to find out why, but would be interested.
My Audiophile is always switched on - it powers on and off with my computer. That means it can be on for many hours - it hasn't blown up yet.
Thanks number9 :D ( is that a Beatles reference?) I guess i can run a separate audio out put for listening to midi files-the dog

I have mine setup so recording is from the M-Audio Mobile preUSB and playback is though the internal sound card. If you pick the M-Audio it goes back out to the M-Audio and tries to play it through external speakers attached to the M-Audio. In other words, the M-Audio has no path to the internal speaker. Atleast thats how it works for me. I may just have something setup wrong or not taking advantage of something.
The only real problem now is the latency I'm getting during recording. lowring the buffer size seems to make little difference, I'm using audacity, but didn't have a problem befor.
I'm no expert, but, usually, the bigger a buffer is, the better the response.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Download and install ASIO4ALL (easy search on that) and it helps alot. Also, give easy control over all aspects. All it is is a replacement ASIO driver with a control panel on the desktop and one for inside of the recording software. You make the changes inside the recording software not from the desktop unless the software does not have one for ASIO control. It actually eliminated (to the ear) the latency between my M-Audio and my analog sound card.
I should have added that it is and easy install and if you don't like it it comes right out with the uninstall
