...thanks Nils, but i'm not sure if that works for me - the only device shoown here is ESS audiodrive. I don't get the option to select ASIO4ALL or KX drivers?....

Did you install ASIO4ALL? If so it should show as a choice.

Also, I am not saying that ASIO4ALL is the only solution. The site I linked to above is also about tweaking the OS to help with the problem.

I did a test today with Audacity using Soundblaster Live! 24-bit card and ASIO4ALL activated for the soundblaster card.
The initial (start) latency is gone, but the playback tracking is still starting to go out of sync after 30 seconds and is really audible after 1 minute av playback.
It is the same with MP3 or Wave files.

Audacity doesnt show any information of using ASIO4ALL in the preferences settings of input and playback device , just information about the hardware cards.

Sorry to say but I don´t think Audacity supports ASIO drivers the same good way as the Kristal SW does.
The use of ASIO drivers is not mentioned anyware in the Audacity manuals as I can read.

In Kristal ASIO4ALL does show up as an actual choice and you can view the control panel from within Kristal. In Audacity it will not show up because Audacity does not directly handle the driver options and make it selectable or make the controls available.

However, if you use the system level ASIO4ALL control panel to map ASIO4ALL to the soundcard and select the soundcard in Audacity it does work at the system level. Audacity just does not know it is. The reason for the system level control panel is so you can use ASIO for software that does not directly use ASIO drivers. The other problem with Audacity is that it introduce more latency than Kristal does so it will never be perfect except on a very high end PC.

So it is true that Audacity does not directly support ASIO but you get some help at the system level with ASO4ALL on none ASIO devices.

Yup
I used the ASIO4ALL control panel to activate ASIO4ALL for my SB soundcard and it had an impact on Audacity as it reduced the intitial (start of track) latency to a low level. But I still have the problem with recorded tracks going out of sync.

After being fidling with Audacity and Kristal back and for, I find that I like the Kristal user interface better.
Even if the user interface is more complex in the beginning compared to Audacity, it is fairly easy to learn.
And as Kristal is making better use of ASIO drivers it really made my going for using it.

I agree with Kalle and also like the KAE interface better myself and primarily use it for recording but it did take a little bit of a learning curve. I like the editing capabilities in Audacity better and have it selected as my external editor in KAE. I like the way KAE handles the audio interface control panel better plus it has a real interface for external VST effects where Audacity is basically a line control for effects.

Hi
I have a problems with playback recording using Audacity.
When I record a new guitar solo track during playback from a background track, the two tracks will not be in sync during playback ( as suspected).
But, even if I adjust the track sync in the beginning of the tracks, with the time shift tool, the tracks will go out of sync after approximatly 1 minute of playback.
It sounds as the track no 2 is running a little bit faster then track no 1 .

I have made other playback recording with the Creative Media Source player SW ( included with my Creative Soundblaster Live! 24-bit card) No such sync problems there.

Any tips on how solve these sync problems ?
The background track is an imported MP3 track.
Could it be a computer or soundcard problem ?
Or is it a setup problem in Audacity that I don´t know of?

Oh my god!! I've had this problem, too, and I thought it was a problem with the other programs I was using to record the various parts. One program for drums, one for bass, and one for piano. I thought one of them had a timing issue, but maybe it's Audacity after all?? Haha that would make more sense. I eventually just went with a different program and there is still a little lag, but I'm able to edit it and sync it up, so hopefully it stays that way =P
