First time I've ventured here, but I didn't have a clue as to where else I should post this question.....

OK, I've got a webcam and a mic for the PC - what do I need to record a video? Is there some free software I can download? I'm not after top quality, either soundwise or videowise....just something to record and play back a video of me and/or myself a couple of friends jamming.

:D :D :D

I'll assume that you are using Windows XP on your computer. If not, you may completely ignore me.

In the programs menu, under accessories you should find a program called "windows movie maker". Click on that.

- Once you have started movie maker, click on "file...capture video".
- In the window that pops up, you should be able to select your web cam as an input source. Also set up the levels for your microphone input.
- Click next.
- Assign your epic a file name, click next.
- Make any changes you see fit (or just accept the defaults, and click next.
- Now you should see your smiling face looking back at you. Adjust the aim of the camera as required, then click "start capture".

This is the part where you perform

- Click "stop capture"
- Click "finish"

You should be returned to the video editor part of the program, with your video ready for playback, or editing.
If you don't feel like editing it, you are done. Unless you changed the setting, your video should be stashed in your "My Documents/my videos" directory.

If you want to edit, that's another tutorial. Movie Maker has a pretty good "how to get started in editing" in it's help menu.

Or... my Windows Movie Maker is in the start menu under "Video"......

You can just do a search for "windows movie maker" to find out exactly where yours might be......

Thanks Electra.

I'm constantly amazed at how Windows manages to randomize things that should be fairly standard.

I know exactly what you mean! I bought 2 identical computers on the same day from the same store and when I got them home they were set up completely different from one another! Definitely random!!

Myself and my friend's band just got put on to WoozyFly - they gave us free studio in exchange for some music rights for their original content...all you need is a webcam and you can broadcast your own shows and talk to your fans, etc.

You should get in touch with them through their site to schedule some time - but check out the video we did with them:

Good luck with the video, Vic! My band started recording our live shows recently with my bandmate's Macbook and it's so much fun to have that available. It's great what you can learn from watching yourself, too. I never realized how much my hand flaps around at the wrist when I'm strumming! It makes me want to go see how other guitarists look when they're playing.

Anyway, it's rewarding and fun to do the video thing.
