Ive done a bit of talk on a good way to start out on guitar on my blog - takes you over some very basic strumming patterns and one which I feel is of key importance to establishing a good strumming hand.

Be conscious of that pick hand you are using when you start playing with others: all eyeballs on your pick! That's where the rhythm is...not in your fret hand. This is how you will get tight...so keep yer eye on it!
