I am attempting to connect my ipod directly into a powered pa speaker. Everything I read indicates that I need a mini jack at one end and 2 xlrs or 1/4 jacks at the other. The problem is that there is only a single 1/4 jack and a single xlr connection on the powered speaker and I am not using a mixer. Any suggestions? I apologize if the answer is very basic, but I am speaker illiterate. Thanks.

The instructions you received assume you want to go into a stereo input (or 2 mono inputs).
A single speaker ain't going to give you stereo.

What you need is an 1/8 stereo to single 1/4 mono adapter cable. But these aren't common, because it's kink of a kludge. You will be essentially connecting the right and left outputs of your MP3 player together, then connecting that combined output to the input of the powered speaker.
It shouldn't hurt anything, it's just not the "right" way of doing things.
