My amp has a bum tube: it squeels a lot (microphic?). I've been languishing to buy a set of tubes (money is tight right now). Can it damage the amp to continue using it with the bad tube?

Sounds like bad pre-amp tubes. You'll get mixed opinions on whether it will hurt the amp. My opinion is yes it will in the long run. Pre-amp tubes are cheap. 12AX7's are around $10.00 us. They don't need to be bias. Please be aware of the dangers inside the amp that cap's can hold a charge long after its been unplugged.

I'm certain it's one of the power tubes, if that makes a difference?

What you described is something or how pre-amp tube would behave. If there is a loss of volume is generally a sign the output tubes are having a problem.

The only tubes that can hurt an amp are tubes with shorts in them, or a power tube with gas in it that causes a "thermal runaway." But if the thing's sounding bad, it needs replacing.
