I would really like to get an overdriven tone with a lot of sustain, but without too much distortion. I want it to sing, without too much definition of the picking, and long sustain, but don't want to go too dirty. Sort of the Eric Clapton style (for example, the lead intro in "wonderful tonight"). The equipment at my disposal are the following:

- Fender Mexican Strat
- VOX AD30VT amp
- Zoom GFX707 pedal
- Epiphone Galaxy 10 amp

I can get distortion and sustain with either the VOX or the Zoom driving the Galaxy 10. But, they get too "dirty" or too distorted for my taste, especially as the note is held longer.

Something close to what I would like to get is shown as the "Gain 5" clip in the Boss BD-2 pedal page at MF http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=151392
But, I am a little skeptical about what all they used to generate the sound. And, I want to see what I can do with the equipment I have before I look to add more gear.

Any suggestions on settings for the above that might get me closer to this tone is much appreciated!

Have you tried running stereo from the Zoom. Left side into one amp and right side into the other. Then adjust the pedal with one of these Zoom Presets. I'll bet you'll find one that wiil be close to what your looking for. You may have to tweak or adjust them alittle to fine tune, other wise it may put you in the park.

Hope it helps.

Here are some of the sound samples that I thought were good.

Joe,

I thought my Zoom only has a mono out, but after seeing your suggestion, I went and looked at the manual, and it talks about getting a stereo Y cable and connecting two amps. I am not sure if it means that my pedal has a stereo jack, and I get a cable that splits the left and right separately, or it has a mono jack, and I simply split that into two. Not really clear from the manual, maybe I have to read the fine print. (Edit: after looking carefully at the diagrams, it does indeed look like there is a stereo jack; learn something new everyday :-))

I have also looked at your presets before, but I could not directly map them to what I see on my 707. For example, I have a comp+distortion module that has CMP+DS, OD1, OD2, DIST1, DIST2, CMP+OD etc.

From your suggestion and Dogbites to use a compressor, maybe I should really experiment with the CMP+OD settings.

Thanks.

Yes here's a Zoom image from the manual.

I did those presets before the first zoom went on the market. Their for the 505. Sorry. Perhaps adjust an effect thats close to the ones I have listed. Their names may have changed It wouldn't be hard to adapt them for your pedal. If anything the amount of each setting should put you close. You should be able to get the sound your wanting with the right amount of experimenting and adjustments to your pedal and amps.

Joe,

Thanks for the link to the picture. I already did some experiments with the pedal and the Galaxy, I am getting closer. I plan to get a setero Y cable when I go out today.

After having looked at the 707 manual more, I think I can map some of your settings at least partially to it.
Is there a particular one out of that set that you would recommend I try, based on what I said about the tone earlier?

thanks!

you might want to try the big muff pie. I've had the russian one for awhile, and while i don't use it much (gas), it has a nice sound. but if your willing to pay a little more, get the american. Unless you want another amp. I can't help you there

Not trying to be offensive but I would *not* use the zoom in any way with the Vox for now. Apart from the soundquality of that Zoom series the tone sucking it does is insane. If you want to use both amps (which would be a good idea although it probably wouldn't help with your immediate issue) just get a A/B/Y box. Unfortunately I can't listen to those samples as I detest Realplayer, but anyway: try the 4x10 amp model, use a fairly high mid and tame the treble a bit. Set the master volume to max, the channel volume to match your other channel and the power level to set final volume. Gain depends on your pickups, set it so it somewhat overdrives at medium picking strength, a lot when picking hard and not at all when softly picking. Now add a compressor/sustainer using relatively mild settings: you want it to make the sound more beefy, not ruin your dynamics. Finally add a hint of reverb.

That, atleast, is how I get my singing blues tone if I were only allowed to use the Vox.

Arjen,

Thanks for your suggestions on the settings for the VOX. I will be sure to try them. I didn't remember there being a compressor + reverb setting, but I have not used the effects side that much.

When you say 'adjust volume to match other channel', you mean if I am playing two amps at the same time, right?

Sorry, I use a seperate compressor pedal, you can't mix comp/reverb. With adjusting the volume I mean adjusting it to the other channel on your Vox. So if you go from clean to gain there isn't a bizarre volume difference. You would then match the general Vox volume with the Epi.
