Hey all. I just got one of these things and I'm excited to get it some fresh tubes. I already know I want to put a Tung Sol 12ax7 in position 1, and have a Jan Philips 5751 for either position 2 or the phase inverter.
I have single EL84 tube. http://thetubestore.com/teel84single.html
Now would this work in the power tube section? I'm just going to throw JJ's in the rest but ones like this http://thetubestore.com/teslael34l.html
So there's that question. And any suggestions on what I should put in the phase inverter or position 2. I want a good amount of clean headroom, so I can always use the top boost channel but get it loud and clean. I'll push it into OD with a pedal.
While we're at it, any good alternatives to the Mullard rectifier?
You might consider the upgraded premium package. http://thetubestore.com/vox-ac30cc.html I did not research all of it, but spent some time looking at what you want. I don't know if it would give you the open headroom, or an upgrade?
Edit: I felt my advice was incomplete and that it shifted the onus to you/research (it is your choice and responsibility to yourself?) so I looked up these AX7's and can't help but think that they are better. http://thetubestore.com/tungsol12ax7.html

I don't think that your idea will work - you can't substitute EL34's for EL84's.
You also can't just mix and match any old valves and expect to have a good sound. Most amps, which have more than one valve, run them in pairs - which are balanced for output. They may also need biasing.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?
