A Compressor reduces the dynamic range of the music levels.
It increases the low levels and decreases the high levels.
It is good for use with microphone channels, when a singer or a instrument player moves back and for in distance from the mic or have problem with controlling the volume when singing or playing.

A noise suppressor is nearly the reverse of a compressor.
It reduces the output levels on very low signal levels to reduce the hearable noise at silent (or nearly silent) periods in the music.

Yamaha RGX 320FZ electric guitar/Egnater Tweaker 15 amp.
Yamaha RBX 270 bass/Laney DB 150 amp.

Plus I believe the compressor can increase the sustain...at least I see several compressor pedals that have both included on them.

A compressor/Limiter will add sustain, since the (decaying) softer sounds get a boost for a certain period of time, resulting in a longer lasting note. The downside is that playing dynamics are limited since intentionally softer notes get boosted as well.

Compressors are one of the most usefull effects ever. While they do reduce playing dynamics, used properly they do some really cool things.

Compressors typically have 4 adjustments:

Threshold
Gain
Attack
Release

Knowing what each of those do and how they effect the final sound is really important to getting the most out of the pedal.

Threshold is the loudness point at which the compressor starts to kick in.

Gain controls how the sound is effected once the threshold is reached - from off to heavily limited usually.

Attack is the amount of time the threshold has to be reached before the gain is kicked in

Release is how long it takes the gain to be turned off once the threshold is crossed going down.

My pedal only has Level & Sensitivity...

level probably is gain
sensativity is probably threshold

they more than likely chose attack and release values for you and just put in a set resister insead of a potentiometer
