Hi, I'm new!

I've taught myself to play guitar and have played now on and off for about six years. I have not gravitated away from open chords much, even into barre chords. So I was wanting some advice, because I want to become a more proficient technical player:
* the best way to learn the fretboard (scales) and what is a good song to demonstrate your proficiency?
* The best way to learn the CAGED system

and more of a psychological question- Is it easy to learn a better way, if you have learned the wrong / an inefficient way in the past?

I'm looking forward to hearing your responses. I want to help others, but I feel I have possibly taught myself awkwardly, so may need some help before I help others! :?

Well what made you pick up a guitar in the first place? Which style of music etc.
